History and Journalism Teacher
Brimmer and May School
Chestnut Hill, Massachusetts
In the 2002 Brimmer and May yearbook, my fellow seniors designated me as the “most likely to return to my alma mater as a history teacher.” And they were right. My classroom is next to Ted Barker-Hook’s—my U.S. history teacher, my mentor, and the person who ignited in me the desire to inspire young minds as a high school history teacher.
I’d follow in his footsteps and many other educators who made me feel welcome and engaged. On my first day of fourth grade, as the "new kid,” I remember how a lively woman with a beaming smile sparkled in the light from the windows behind her. “Welcome to Brimmer and May,” said Sharin Russell, my homeroom teacher (and eventual colleague). “We are so happy that you are here.”
In that moment I felt reassured that I was exactly where I was meant to be. Nearly three decades later, that feeling continues to burn brightly—a constant reminder of the powerful impact a caring educator can have. I still meet regularly with Ted to explore the intricate craft of the historian or to refine teaching strategies. And I am grateful for my unwavering commitment to pay it forward and share the knowledge, wisdom, and purpose that a talented group of educators so graciously bestowed upon me.
