Boston Globe honors Landmark artists
Summer 2010
Artists from Landmark High School (Massachusetts) received 23 Gold and Silver Keys and Honorable Mentions from the 2010 Boston Globe Scholastic Art & Writing Awards. In its 86th year, the competition is the longest running recognition program for teen artists and writers in the nation.
The Landmark artists were recognized with five Gold Key Awards, which were entered into the national competition, 11 Silver Keys, and seven Honorable Mentions. An estimated 100,000 submissions are made to the Boston Globe competition nationwide. At both the regional and national levels, entries are blind judged by a jury of professional artists and writers ranging from fine and multimedia artists to poets and novelists.
“To be able to create something is an amazing feeling, but to be recognized and rewarded is indescribable,” said Landmark senior Sarah Streck. “Coping with the constant struggles of my learning disabilities, I’ve never achieved such success in academic areas; my skills as an artist help me to share a strong and independent part of myself. Winning the two Gold Keys was like having the world recognize me for the first time.”
According to Beth Jamieson, head of Landmark’s art department, “The ultimate payoff was not just in public recognition, but in the confidence of the students.”
All of the student winners from Massachusetts were feted at an awards ceremony in February. The art and writing were exhibited publicly in Boston’s Transportation Building from February 1 – March 19, 2010.
The Landmark artists’ work will advance to a national competition and be included in a public exhibition in New York City in June 2010.
