Mission Statement
Independent School, published by the National Association of Independent Schools, is an open forum for exchange of information about elementary and secondary education in general and independent schools in particular.

Independent School provides people associated with private schools and those interested in following trends in all sectors of education with the independent school perspective on topics that range from school operations and administration to teaching and learning and working with parents, boards of trustees, and other volunteers. It has been the premier publication in private education for over sixty years.


Subscriptions Rates
Independent School welcomes all readers. NAIS Members $30.00; nonmembers $50.00. Foreign NAIS members call 800-793-6701 in the US for prices Single copies: Members $11.00, nonmembers $18.00. Bulk rates: 20% discount when ordering five or more; 30% discount when ordering 20 or more; 40% discount when ordering 100 or more.

All teachers, administrators, and trustees of NAIS-member schools can receive the NAIS-member rate. All others must subscribe at the nonmember rate. Schools interested in joining NAIS should visit our member services section.

School Promotion
An informed community is an engaged community. We encourage schools to encourage their teachers, trustees, parents, and other members of the school community to become regular readers of Independent School. To promote Independent School among trustees, parents, and other members of your independent school community, download the PDF of our promotional flyer for easy reproduction and distribution.

Many of our back issues are available for order through our online bookstore or by phone at 800-793-6701. Discounts are available for bulk orders.

Independent School is an open forum for exchange of information about elementary and secondary education in general, and independent schools in particular. Manuscripts may be submitted via e-mail to ismag@nais.org.

We encourage submissions on any compelling topic in precollegiate education. We're also happy to read articles focused on our published themes (see below). Please note that there are no specific editorial deadlines for submission to any issue, but we generally close out each issue three months prior to publication. It's best to think a season or two ahead. Theme-related submissions that arrive too late will also be considered for future issues. In addition to articles, we also accept shorter items about school news or programs for The Reporter section of the magazine

Concise articles are preferred. Authors should allow at least two months for a decision. Independent School is published four times a year (fall, winter, spring, summer) by the National Association of Independent Schools.

Please indicate clearly with your submission whether your article, or any variation, has been published in another publication.

Honors Abound for Independent School

NAIS is proud to that our flagship magazine, Independent School, is a two-time winner of the Association of Educational Publishing's (AEP) Golden Lamp Award, the highest honor in educational publishing.  The magazine is a frequent winner of awards recognizing excellence in association and education publishing.

Additonally the magazine was nominated this year for two AEP Distinguished Achievement Awards.  The first is for outstanding magazine in the Adult category.  The second is for Michael Brosnan's interview with Jim Collins, "The Curious Pursuite of Greatness."

Independent School additionally was the recent recipient of three awards from The Society for National Association Publishing (SNAP):
